Pruning Apple Tree

Step 1: Accessing the Apple Tree

The tree could require a step ladder if its too big. Be sure to find a safe solution or contact someone with good experience.

Step 2: Using the equipment

Use secateurs and maybe a saw. Make sure your tools are not blunt!

Step 3: Removing the branches

  • Cut at the base of the branch.
  • Remove the dead branches.
  • Remove branches which are growing directly up.
  • Remove any branches which are touching other branches.
  • If in doubt do not remove, come back next year to finish.
  • Ideally remove about 1/5th of the tree.
  • Avoid cutting branches which are longer than an adults index finger.

Step 4: Collecting the branches

Collect all the branches and store in a pile, in a designated area. Keep dry and keep off the ground. This will be ready for burning or cooking with after one year.
